🌳 The Patriarch — Shri. Varkey Thottungal (c. 1750–1830s)

Shri. Varkey Thottungal was the visionary patriarch who embarked on a transformative journey between 1780 and 1800, migrating from Kuravalangadu to Kavumbhagom in Tiruvalla. This wasn't merely a physical relocation but a deliberate choice to establish a new chapter for his family — one rooted in faith, community service, and enduring values. His courage and determination in this journey set the foundation for what would become one of Kerala's most prominent and respected family lineages.

💑 The Sacred Union (c. 1800)

Varkey Thottungal married Mariamma of the distinguished Kalarickal family from Idinjillam, Tiruvalla. This union was not just a marriage but a joining of two respected families. Together, they were blessed with four sons who inherited and perpetuated the family's legacy of faith, integrity, and community commitment. Their lineage would go on to produce leaders, educators, clergy, and community servants who shaped the social and spiritual landscape of Tiruvalla and beyond.

⛪ Faith and Community (Early 1800s)

The entire Thottungal family were devoted members of the Tiruvalla Paliakkara Orthodox Church, where they played active roles in community life. This spiritual commitment became the cornerstone of the family identity, instilling values of service, compassion, and stewardship across generations. The family's church involvement wasn't ceremonial but genuine — they invested their time, resources, and leadership in strengthening their faith community.

✨ Founders of St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church (Mid 1800s)

When the Mar Thoma Syrian Church was established in Tiruvalla, the Thottungal family became among its founder members. This was a pivotal moment in both the family and church history. The Thottungal name became synonymous with the SCS Tiruvalla, and the family's legacy of leadership in this church continues to this day. Generation after generation, Thottungal family members have served as elders, teachers, and spiritual guides within this community.

From the single family of Varkey and Mariamma, the Thottungal lineage grew and diversified into ten distinct family houses, each with its own character and story:

📅 The Annual Family Gathering Tradition

For over two centuries, the Thottungal family has maintained the sacred tradition of annual family gatherings. These aren't mere reunions but spiritual and cultural touchstones where the family reaffirms its bonds, celebrates achievements, remembers the departed, and transmits values to new generations. The 26th Annual Meet was held on December 26, 2025, and this tradition continues to strengthen the family's unity across geographic distances and changing times.

🌍 Present Day — A Living Legacy (240+ Years)

Today, more than 240 years after Varkey Thottungal's courageous migration, the Thottungal Kudumbam stands as a testament to the power of faith, family, and community. The family has produced professionals, educators, clergy, business leaders, and social workers who have contributed significantly to Kerala and India. Many Thottungal family members reside abroad but maintain deep connections to their roots in Tiruvalla. The annual family gathering continues to be a beacon that brings everyone together, regardless of geography or circumstance.

The family motto — "Ten houses, one heart" — captures the essence of Thottungal identity: diversity united by common values, history, and love. As we move forward, we carry the torch lit by Varkey Thottungal and Mariamma, honoring their legacy while creating new chapters of achievement, compassion, and service.
